When I shop for clothes I tend to follow my own set of rules simply because I don’t want to regret my purchase in the nearest future.
Rule 1 – Comfort
In my opinion it is the most important quality of a garment. It cannot be too tight or constrict my movements. Tight-fitting clothes make me nervous. I cannot breathe and I want to rip them off. To avoid a claustrophobic attack I often choose oversize clothes or buy an item in a larger size.
Rule 2 – Look
Fashion changes so often that it is hard to keep up with the latest trends. It is virtually impossible for me to change my wardrobe completely every few months because I am a hoarder and I am attached to my stuff emotionally. In my collection there are pieces that my Mum wore when she was my age. Besides, I am not a slave of fashion. Not everything that is trendy must necessarily suit me. I buy only the things that I like and I know I look good in. Clothes should accentuate my body shape instead of drawing attention to my shortcomings. A well-chosen outfit can turn a ragbag into a princess!
Rule 3 – Price
Price is an important factor I take into consideration while shopping. I do not buy an expensive piece just because it caught my eye. If it is a thing from my I-must-have-it-or-else-my-heart-will-break list then I think how many times I would wear it. There’s no point splashing a huge amount of money on something that I will put on only once. Instead I can use that cash to buy not one, but two or three items.
I often buy my clothes on bargain sales or look for items on the Internet. eBay is a great place to find some real clothing gems at a reasonable price. I also call on my dressmaker if I need something but can’t find it anywhere. A cost of fabric and of a dressmaker might be a cheaper option to get a garment of one’s dreams.
Rule 4 – Timeless style
There are some clothes that will always be in fashion – a trench coat, a black jacket or a black dress. They belong to timeless classics and are worth having in one’s wardrobe. With few stylish essentials it is easy to put a good outfit together.
My timeless items are the ones I present in today’s outfit. Each and every piece is suitable for various occasions and can be easily combined with other clothes. The colour of the garments is also important – black adds elegance and smartness to our wardrobe, and even simple jeans seem chic.
Rule 5 – Personal touch
My favourite style is called casual elegance. It means being stylish in an understated manner. It’s a more relaxed way of being elegant and that’s how I like to be – comfortable in my own clothes and chic at the same time.
A pair of black jeans and a white sweater are hardly sophisticated, but when I add a black jacket and black biker boots I get a nice work outfit.
However, if I add a trench coat, a little black bag and swap biker boots for high heels I transform my outfit into an attire suitable for an evening outing with friends.
Do you like casual elegance? What is your favourite style?
