New Year = New Me? Well, I prefer New Year = new clothes. That’s a more realistic approach to New Year’s resolutions, I think.
What makes people think that they will change their whole personalities and life-long habits just because it’s January? If you really wanted to make a change you would start a long time ago!
That’s why I don’t make a long list of things I want to alter in my life. It would be useless. The things I want to change are simply unchangeable: my height, age, eye colour, social status (I want to be a duchess but the number of single dukes who fancy me are zero).
And there are so many things I have no control over. My appetite, for example. It has a life of its own and no brain of mine can affect its behaviour. It usually wakes up at 11 p.m. and demands food in large quantities. And it doesn’t matter that I am already in my pyjamas lying comfortably under my duvet.
I can stare for hours at my New Year’s resolution list’s first item YOU SHALL NOT EAT AFTER 5 P.M. and pray fervently for deliverance from temptation. But to no avail!!! I know that in the end I will go to the kitchen and grab something to kill my hunger and fall asleep. If only! Self-reproaches usually keep me well until the early morning hours. Madness!!!
That’s why my piece of paper is blank – there are no nonsensical promises I am not going to keep. Instead, I am making a list of clothes I want to buy, books I need to read and places I desire to visit.
That’s the best way to plan your year – do what makes you happy and don’t try to change yourself into something you are not.
